Mohair is the hair product from the Angora goat. The goat Hircus Angorensis of Anatolia by the Turks was imported from the mountains and perhaps dell’Altai from Tibet over the centuries XV and XVI through the ports of Constantinople and Smyrna the Mohair days regularly in Europe, but the export of live animals of Angora goats was, until 1820, banned by the sultan, in the same way the King of Spain prohibited the export of breeding Merinos, the death penalty.
The name of the Angora goat comes from Ankara, the capital of Turkey and the name of Mohair is an Anglo-Saxon word for remote introduction derived from two Arabic words: Mo = Pelo and Khayyara = chosen, then Mukhyar. In 1833 Colonel John Henderson imported from Turkey, the first Angora goats in South Africa during the trip that gave birth to a kid, those two started with the breeding success of mohair in the region of Karda in within 300 miles from Port Elizabeth found the ideal environment in Lesotho and will raise the Basuto Mohair, which is polluted with dead hair colored and they left the farm to native.
In the following years were imported to the United States some Angora goats from Turkey and is also from South Africa and then evolved further market Mohair. The breeding and production was a difficult thing, as the Angora goat a delicate and timid animal that can easily die from cold, rain or drought.
The mohair is classified into several types: Kid 25-30my, Yaoung Goats 32/34my, Adults 36/39my, the manufacturer selects each fleece after shearing for fineness, length, cleanliness, style and character. As the shearing, as mentioned, conducted twice a year in South Africa is producing tosa tosa summer and winter. The finesse of an adult can reach 38-39my.
The lengths range from 150 mm and above 50 mm, but the mass production ranges from 125 to 75 mm. The South African Mohair Board collects the sheared material  and after the further classification the  Mohair is auctioned in Port Elizabeth. In the past it was widely used for the production of fabrics for upholstery and heavy curtains especially in the Nordic countries. The advent of new synthetic fibers has reduced much of this use mainly for reasons of cost.
The mohair is very exposed to the fashion factor, so its  price is subject to strong fluctuations. One of the major countries of the users of  Mohair is the United Kingdom along with Japan .
